James - Week 3

So this was a tough week.  We had a great mother's day, ending with a huge milkshake and me deciding that James was fussy and it MUST be dairy.  So for 5 days I didn't eat dairy, red meat, tomatoes, too much caffeine, gluten, etc etc, trying to see if that was why he was so fussy.  I tried gas relief drops, gripe water, propping him up for 30 minutes after eating, raising his mattress on one side, etc.

This  is what my meals looked like..

eggs, squash, portabella, pork, chicken, sausage, carrots, grapes, bananas, sweet potatoes

and after 5 days Dave and I decided he was no better.  So, I ate Grimaldi's pizza, Escalante's queso, all my favorite things for the weekend and then... he was WAY worse.  Without too many details he has every sign of food allergies and his adorable older cousin went through all of this plus some so it might run in the family.

So, back to no dairy on Sunday.  I talked to the doctor on Monday and the doctor said no dairy and no eggs and put him on Prevacid for reflux.  Now we're at day 2 of no dairy and eggs, we'll see how the week goes!

If you know me, you know that breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and when Dave is out of town I eat breakfast for dinner all the time.  Question - what do you eat for breakfast if you can't have milk or eggs and not even baked into anything?! Bacon, fruit, oatmeal?  Hmm..

squash, apples, sausage for breakfast
Good thing that James is so darn cute!!  Here are some pics from the week:

17 weeks - onion - Crossfit and pregnant

17 weeks - Onion!

How cute are Buddy and Callie? I'll think they're interested in me, but really it's the onion.
First and foremost - I am not a doctor and don't claim to be.  I got out of school wayyyy before getting there! :)  I'm just saying what has worked for me while doing Crossfit while pregnant.

When I found out I was pregnant I searched the internet for all Crossfit blogs about how to be pregnant and crossfit.  I found the awesome website www.crossfitmom.com that tells you what you should do during your first trimester, second trimester, and third trimester.  It also showed these movements and how to substitute them. This helped me tremendously, but what I didn't find was every movement and how real women were working on each thing.

Luckily, my awesome coach at Crossfit Caveman had just crossfitted (is that a word?) through her pregnancy. I knew there were a couple other people who were pregnant there too, but I didn't want everyone to know I was pregnant.

By looking at the Crossfit mom website I found out that for my first trimester I was probably good.  I told the coaches so they didn't push me too hard.

The "What to Expect When You're Expecting" Book says that your baby LIKES the change in heart rate and breathing and it emphasizes getting 30 minutes of exercise most days.  Although the whole time I try to maintain a normal heartrate/breathing. Kind of difficult while working out though.  I always make sure I can talk.

Take note that I started Crossfit in January and I got pregnant in July, so I had 6 months of Crossfit beforehand.  I started as a skinny weak girl, so I wasn't RX'ing every movement pre-pregnancy.  I talked about starting crossfit here.

Here's what I have done so far - this doesn't mean it works for everyone!:

First Trimester:
  • I felt very weak and tired (no sickness) just pure exhaustion.  So I lowered the weight/intensity on everything.
  • Continued to do all movements though.
  • Took breaks to keep heart rate from getting too high.
Second Trimester (so far) at 17 weeks:
  • Took breaks to keep heart rate from getting too high. Made sure I can talk during the WOD
  • don't squat below 90 degrees (takes a lot to get used to)
  • burpees - still do them, just much more controlled
  • box jumps - do step ups instead
  • broad jumps - I will sub those out, they're probably "too jumpy"
  • Deadlifts - oddly enough, these feel very difficult because of the "but down, chest up", so I've been subbing them out for something such as KettleBell swings
  • double unders - my double unders are UGLY, and my doctor said not to do anything "too jumpy" so I've done singles instead because they're more controlled and efficient
  • farmer carry - less weight or whatever is comfortable
  • front squat - without being able to squat below 90 my form is awful on the front squat, so I've used a Kettlebell (goblet squat) and just don't squat the whole way
  • goblet squats - do them, just not full depth
  • handstand pushups - Can't do anything upside down (and I hate it/can't do them anyway), so I do seated dumbell push press
  • KettleBell Swings - I had been doing 35 pounds, now I do 25 pounds.
  • Lunges - still feel good, but I've heard these will get difficult
  • overhead squats - attempt with less weight and not full depth
  • power clean - do from hang position
  • prowler push - I don't do this anymore, there's no way to keep your heart rate down during that
  • Pullups - I could do a few kipping pullups pre-pregnancy, I then moved to purple band, then red band, and now I'm at blue band.
  • push press/shoulder press - still do, just less weight (about 75%) - which is 35/45 pounds rather than 55.. like I said, skinny weak girl to start :)
  • pushups - still comfortable for me, recently switched to knees
  • ring dips - maintained current band
  • row - still do, just not for time
  • run - still do, just no sprinting
  • situps - the scale is knees to elbows, but I hate those so I'm doing russian twists
  • slam ball - still do full depth, just slower and only 10 pounds
  • snatches - attempt with less weight, hang position
  • sumo deadlift high pull - use kettlebell and don't go full depth
  • supermans - I do them on the GHD (and I actually do about 20 at the end of each class to strengthen my back)
  • toes to bar - still attempting to do them, I can do a few in a row
  • wall balls - still do, just not full squat
  • wall climbs - nothing inverted (and let's be honest.. I hate being upside down), so I've done what looks like a backward inchworm
So - what did I forget? I hope this helps somebody who is newly pregnant and I'll continue to update with what I've changed through pregnancy!

At the end of each workout I've done a bunch of pullups because we're doing a 1000 pullup challenge for November and the GHD supermans.

Our coaches and my husband have been WONDERFUL and very supportive the entire time.  They make alternate WODs for workouts that involve all sprinting or rows for time or the team WOD of dodgeball....

As far as what we've been up to this week?  We chose baby names, yay!  We find out next week if it's a boy or a girl and now that we know the names I'm super excited for either!

Dave was at deer camp with the boys so I hung out with the girls.  We went and watched the A&M (woohoo they beat Alabama!) and a guy at the bar tried to buy us all shots.. thank goodness I had an excuse this time ;)!

While the hubby was away.. I.. painted..and painted..and painted!  The nursery is coming along!  I made the mistake and sent a pic of the paint to the boys.. they flipped.  After they researched it all, they told me I was good and I was back to painting!  I wore gloves, opened the windows, used latex paint, and turned on the fan! I was good to go!  Remember here when we started the wainscoting?

The room all prepped and ready for paint.

                                                           Here it's almost painted.
We still need to the doors and trim around the doors.  And I'm trying to pick the perfect gray color.. we'll see!

15 weeks - orange

15 weeks - Orange

I've gained 6 pounds so far, and am still feeling great!  This weekend in between our house guests, we cleaned out the whole garage, it's all ready for the camaro!! Yay!!  Remember this thing?  We also did another headboard for the guest room!! Can't wait to decorate it!  Will blog it soon.  But for now, it's on the what works and what doesn't from pinterest.

Yesterday was a doctor's appointment and everything is going as planned!  Baby Ball is measuring correctly and got to hear the heartbeat, which is always SO fun.  Heartbeat is 145, last time it was 162.  They said it all depends on eating/activity/etc.

I was very honest with my doctor about doing Crossfit and guess what! She was totally okay with all of it!  I told her that I follow www.crossfitmom.com and look at the different trimesters and scales.  I said I know it's not my doctor though and so I really wanted to make sure she was okay with it all. After all the sweet ladies at work told me all about how I shouldn't be reaching above my head (and I've been doing thrusters in Fran, pullups, push press, etc) I thought I should ask.

Dave and I got to go with our realtor to a wounded warriors function for www.helpingahero.org It was awesome!! President George W. Bush was the speaker and Dennis Miller, the comedian, was the MC.  I was very proud to be an American and Dave looked so good  in his dress blues!  I wore heels that night and we hardly got served any more water once the presentation began, so I woke up in the middle of the night almost in tears due to the leg cramps I was having.  In case you're wondering, water and bananas aren't the only thing you need, calcium is pretty important too.  My doc said  to just take some tums and I should feel better. That helped!  And... I have to forego the heels :( such a bummer, but beauty is not worth those leg cramps..ever again.  Can't wait to see the cute new flats that are coming in tomorrow!

We also had awesome friends, Ben and Laura, come into town last weekend.  They have two really cute kids who are so well behaved!  It's amazing what routine can do for some cute kids, they were angels!  She also has her own blog, www.ourfullplate.com which is full of healthy eating, working mom, cute stuff.  I can't wait to try some of her recipes!  They brought us this super cute little Sophie chew toy.  I'm obviously not a mom yet, since I had no clue that it was the "best new thing".  But it's all BPA, etc. free.

Can't wait to meet this cute baby so it can start chewing on Sophie! :)

Clay Pot Chicken

We got to see an adorable couple the other night, Amy and Mike, and she gave me the sweetest gift, because she remembered that a year ago I had said I'd never tried cooking with a clay pot and she and her husband love cooking with it!  I wish I had a picture of them from the other night, but I don't.  Hopefully next time!!

She gave me a cookbook as well, but I decided to just wing it and see what happened.  It actually turned out pretty well!

So, to start you HAVE to soak the clay pot for 10 minutes in water (both pieces) to fill in the pores.

During that time I prepared the chicken.

After cleaning the chicken, put olive oil on the outside.

Then generously add salt and pepper.  And rub it all around.  Put some on the inside too.

Then roll 2 lemons to get the juices moving, prick them with a fork and put them inside the cavity of the chicken.

Smash garlic cloves and put a few of those inside the cavity as well.

Place the chicken in the clay pot.

Squeeze juice of a lemon over the top.  Leave the lemons in the pot.

Cut up an onion and put it around the chicken. Add some garlic in there.

Put rosemary in there.  I have my own rosemary now, yay!!

Now, put it in a COLD oven and then turn the heat to 450 degrees.  Let it cook for 1 hour 15 minutes.  Uncover it and let it cook for another 15 minutes.

Take it out and put it on a potholder or trivet, (not the cold counter, don't want it to break).

Let it set for a few minutes, then you have some yummy chicken!!  Enjoy!

This is Paleo for all you paleo people out there :)

Here's cute Buddy helping me out!

Brussel Sprouts can be good?

If you were to ask my parents, they would say I hate brussel sprouts.  If you asked my husband's parents they would  say he thinks they're "cheese carriers".  So, who knew that we now eat brussel sprouts all the time and actually like them!!

I have to give a big thank you to Dave's sister for sharing this recipe with us!

As we try to eat more healthy, these are a yummy vegetable with great flavor and no bad  stuff on it!
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Start with some fresh brussel sprouts.

Then cut off the ends.

And slice them in half.

Then heat up the teeny-tiniest little bit of olive oil in a pan.

Place the brussel sprouts face down in the pan.

Add fresh rosemary (a couple sprigs)

And salt.

(they'll look like this with the oil, brussel sprouts, rosemary, and salt)

Then - you'll get them nice and "brown".

Dump them onto a baking sheet. And, bake them for 10-15 minutes until you can pierce them with a fork and they're tender.

Then you have delicious Brussel Sprouts!!!  They're crunchy on the outside and tender, and perfect.  And oh-so good for you!

Enjoy!

Ingredients:
Fresh brussel sprouts
salt
rosemary
olive oil

Directions:
Cut brussel sprouts in half.  Heat olive oil in pan.  Place brussel sprouts face down in pan. Add rosemary and salt.  Once brown, put everything onto baking sheet.  Bake for 10-15 minutes.
